Why "Survivor: Cook Islands" Doesn't Bother Me, and Why it Shouldn't bother you, Either

advertisement

So it's old news now, Survivor: Cook Islands divides contestants according to race. They announce it on the CBS Early Show, lots of people cry racism, politicians band together to stop this "racist" beast from hitting the air...

And then the show aires and it's really not such a big deal.

I'm honestly very tired of hearing so much negativity about the current season's setup. Yes, yes, I know, race is not a subject that is taken lightly, and to place people according to ethnic background seems highly unorthodox. But when you sit down and think about it, and I mean, REALLY think about it, it's not a big deal. I'm well aware that of all the "isms" out there, Racism is one of the biggest problems. But honestly, there is really nothing that controversial in this show. Let's look at it on simpler terms:

Q: Are any stereotypes enforced by Mark Burnett Productions?
A: No. Notice that the tribes are named things like "Aitu," "Puka," "Hiki," and "Raro" as opposed to "Latino," "Asian," "Black," and "White." It's the contestants who make or break the show. It's the contestants who will decide whether or not to look at the racial separation as a negative, and it's the contestants who will decide whether or not to be colorblind.

Q: Are any of the tribes placed lower than others?
A: No. All of the tribes are equal. If you watched the first challenge you'd have noticed how close it was between Puka and Aitu, and how close it was between Hiki and Raro. No tribe is superior to another. Every tribe gets equal opportunities.

Q: Is this the first time that Survivor contestants have been separated in a way that may be portrayed as prejudice?
A: Not at all. One season, contestants were divided by gender. Why weren't the columnists and bloggers and news reporters crying sexism? That's politically incorrect. One season, contestants were divided by age. Why wasn't the media crying ageism? That's politically incorrect.

If you look at the big picture, it's really not a matter of racism. Look at society, in our high schools, or cities, our friends, etc. There are high school youth groups for hispanics, asians, greeks, italians, african americans, and I've yet to see anybody consider those racial dividers. If we can accept cultural youth groups, why are we having so much difficulty accepting cultural teams?

Another thing to remember is that while the other tribes are working together against the other tribes, they are also working against each other. I'm betting that later on in the show, when certain tribes start to lose team mates, the tribes will be mixed. At the end of the show, there can only be ONE winner, regardless of which race he or she belongs to.

So let's all kick back and enjoy the show. If you still think it's got hints of racism, watch the show and be colorblind. Don't look at it as the "black tribe" or the "asian tribe," look at it as "Hiki" and "Puka." It's only as prejudice as we make it.

"...I don't believe that just 'cause these groups have cultural similarities, that that will make them more specifically cohesive. This is Survivor--Somebody's gonna win a million dollars, and they're gonna have to cut the throat of the guy next to them at some point."

-Jonathan, Raro Tribe

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

word.

These teams are also being evaluated for activities that will result in nothing to suggest that one race is superior over another. More over, the most intriguing elements of "survival" come from how well the team member's work together, which is equally challenging for all of humanity regardless of race. So why the team divisions then? I can't really say. I would like to think that cultural experiences may have an impact on developing solutions in the wilderness, but that doesn't make much sense since the team members are all true Americans. Nonetheless, I'm only rooting for the Asians because they have the best looking women - jk, I never watch the show.

Come on Junior! Get behind our people!

We need to have group watching sessions where we eat rice cakes and drink tea.

You can teach your kids the stereotypes but you just can't make them stick. Oh well, I tried.

I think that all the furor over this proves the relevance of Survivor making such a decision. In addition to aiding ratings and viewership, they are openly tackling an issue that is very real in our society today. They're fostering discussion and forcing lots of people to really think about race issues - this can be nothing but good for us. I may be giving a TV show too much credit, but I think it is a great and fascinating move on their part.

Agreed! I think this could turn out to be a fascinating social experiment. Or not. It could just turn out to be another ho-hum season of Survivor.

The whole thing is pretty gimmicky, really, as was Older Men/Older Women/Younger Men/Younger Women last season. If this season follows the pattern of that season, there will be a merge into two tribes in the second or (at a stretch) third episode, and then everything will be ethnically mixed again.

The game can't maintain four tribes for too long because that means that pretty soon you can have tribes of two or three. That makes the challenges (and the rest of the show) boring. They'll have to create bigger tribes soon, and that will get rid of the whole ethnic-divide thing.

Survivor has made teams based on gender...and age. Now it's race. So what. The contestants did not seem to object. It's a game. Yes, the winner gets a million bucks, but it is still just a game. What else is the producer supposed to do? Gay vs. Straight? Democrat vs Republican (although that might actually be interesting)? Good-looking vs. Plain-looking? It had to be race sooner or later.
